How it all started…
Maybe it started already in 2005… we both graduated that summer and thought: how much money do we have, and can we go on a long vacation this summer… Daan pre-paid his living space (12 square meters, were we lived both… :-S ) and we set off with the car to eastern Europe. The experiment: if you go on a trip for 3 weeks, you think after 2,5 weeks: ‘ well, it is about time to head back home…’. Would that also happen if you go for 8 weeks?
We never got bored of it, saw a lot of Eastern Europe and arrived back in The Netherlands with a total capital of 300 euro’s…
Next step was Daan’s driving license for the motorbike (end of 2006) and the purchase of a 1996 Honda XRV 750 Africa Twin.
Mirjam decided afer riding 5000km pillion to take action, and started with driving lessons for the motorbike. She passed the exam at hte end of 2007.
And somewhere it went wrong… but where?
Oops 1…
When Mirjam was following her driving courses, Erik and Miranda (brother and sister in law) gave her a book of Lois Pryce, an English lady who had ridden North to South Amerika, solo. Very nice book, and we both thought: ‘wow, wouldn’t it be great to…”.
After Mirjam got her driving license, she bought The Milka Cow (see ‘Bikes’) from her brother, and we were both driving a Honda XRV-750 Africa Twin.
Oops 2…
We’ve heard of a couple of Britisch guys driving around the world on two BWM 1150GS motorcycles, and made a documentary about it. In reality, they hade made two trips already, and two documentaries! Long way Round (London-New York) and Long Way Down (Scotland – Cape Town). We have seen these series now 4 times… Would it not be nice to …
We could download the soundtrack of this, which ended up in the cars and on our laptops…
Around this time things went wrong… Would it not be nice to do something cool with the bikes? A lot of red wine and beer was investied in enless conversations with each other and ourselves, and ‘the plan slowly came together’.
Oops 3…
Mirjams nice, called Niki, and here boyfriend made a world trip (backpacking) some years ago; www.worldtrip.nl. We visited them to get some info on a plan like this, and they clearly stated that ‘around 5% of the people who think of a world trip really leave…’.
Oops 4…
The summer of 2008 ended in a motortrip to The Alpes, mainly on-road. It was more a car-vacation by bike, think of heave pottery, big chairs, air matress, etc. But hey, we liked it! And drove a lot!
We did learn something: we had way to many stuff; way too hot suits, sometimes too many kilometers per day, three spare fuelpumps was not enough for Africa Twins, and this trip was way too short!
The thought about doing the trip on a motorcycle went to the background for a while, as we saw some issues in it. A car seemed very relaxed, safer, cheaper, easier!
The deep love for the Citroen BX, and plans were made to build a TravelProofCitroenBX… think of a roll cage, raised suspension, inboard hydraulics, extra fueltanks, bed, overhaul of engines etc.
As a 4×4 was also appealing, we did consider a Citroen Berlingo 4×4 Dangel. Thick 4×4′s we didn’t like, it seemed to easy and we wanted it to look innocent. Lets be honest, all bad guys in the second and third world drive big 4×4′s…
Oops 5…
In sping of 2009 we were heading on a motorcylce trip to France, when things went wrong…
At the first gas station we said to each other, simultaniously, uhm… were you also thinking that we will maybe some day drive away on our bikes… but will not return a week later in The Netherlands? Perhaps this was the second spark between us (the thrid for insiders , but from here on things started to develop!
Some months later we decided to go to a meeting of Horizons Unlimited (www.horizonsunlimited.com), and there it seemed so easy! Bang, this was the moment to decide to GO! THe bad news was, that the Africa Twins were almost for sale on the internet…
They were too heavy, us too unexperienced, driving on allroad-tyres and we got a lot of advices to start on lightweight bikes, e.g. the Suzuki DR-Z400.
We did a testride on these Suzuki’s, and didn’t like it at all.
So the Africa Twins were rebuild, tried to practice driving offroad, Erik (Mirjams’ brother) was promoted to ‘Manager Technical Support (more for his technical skills than his management skills…) and Michiel was ‘selected’ to guard our stuff in The Netherlands when we would be abroad.
And the website went online!
